Henrikh Antonovich Leer (1829-1904) was a General of Infantry and the Head of the Nikolaev Academy of the General Staff (from 1889). He graduated from the Main Engineering School in 1850 and entered service in the 3rd reserve engineer battalion, with which he participated in the Caucasian War in 1851. In 1852-1854 he studied at the Imperial Military Academy. He taught at the Academy of the General Staff amd other military educational institutions. He was the author of a number of important works on tactics, strategy and history of military affairs. Leer was the Chevalier of all Russian orders (except for the Order of St. George) up to and including the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky.
