Established on August 21, 1789. The medal was awarded to all non-commissioned officers and soldiers who participated in the naval battle of Rochensalm on August 13, 1789. During the Russian-Swedish War of 1788–1790. On August 13, 1789, the Russian galley flett under the command of Vice Admiral Prince Karl of Nassau-Siegen defeated the Swedish galley squadron of Admiral Karl August Ehrensverd during a 28-hour battle in the skerries near Rochensalm (Finland). The loss of the Russian fleet amounted to 2 ships, the Swedish - 13 ships and 24 transport ships.
